PVTIME – A major milestone has been reached in the West Macedonia lignite mining area project, a collaboration between LONGi and PPC Renewables (PPCR), the renewable energy subsidiary of Greece’s Public Power Corporation. LONGi has completed the delivery of all 550 MW of its high-efficiency Hi-MO 7 modules, which will be used in Southern Europe’s largest single photovoltaic power plant to date. This project will provide a significant boost to environmental improvement in West Macedonia and the transformation of Greece’s energy structure.

The West Macedonia lignite mining area, located in northwestern Greece, has long been integral to the country’s energy industry, providing substantial lignite resources for electricity generation. As the need for a global energy transition and environmental protection intensifies, Greece is actively adjusting its energy structure. In recent years, solar photovoltaic power plants have begun to be developed in some regions of the West Macedonia mining area, with the aim of improving the local environment and driving regional energy transition through ecological transformation.
The area has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters, and the terrain is undulating with mountains, hills, river valleys and plains. In the face of these complex climatic and topographical conditions, LONGi’s team held multiple in-depth technical discussions with PPCR. They developed an efficient, highly reliable, scenario-specific product solution based on the power plant’s external operating environment, ensuring high energy generation even in harsh conditions such as high temperatures and humidity. Following multiple simulation calculations, LONGi’s modules were found to have an excellent power generation capacity throughout the plant’s lifecycle, perfectly matching the client’s goal of deploying large-scale power plants in the mining area and making them the optimal choice for the project.
Zhang Sheng, President of LONGi’s Centralised Europe division, noted the company’s commitment to providing global clients with reliable, efficient and trustworthy photovoltaic products and professional support and services throughout the project lifecycle. He described the 550 MW power plant project with PPCR as a vivid example of close collaboration and a win-win partnership between the two teams, who worked together to meet customer needs and achieve the highest project quality. LONGi’s Country Manager for Greece and Cyprus, Athanasios Plainos, added that PPCR’s choice of LONGi as the sole module supplier was a source of pride, representing recognition of both LONGi’s local service capabilities and its technological leadership in its partnership with Greece’s and Southeast Europe’s largest national power company, PPC Renewables.
PPC Renewables, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Greece’s Public Power Corporation (PPC), has deep roots in Greece’s renewable energy market. A leader in European wind and solar power plants since the 1980s, PPC Renewables has laid a solid foundation for Greece’s national energy transition and clean energy industry development. Once operational, the West Macedonia lignite mining area project is expected to significantly reduce regional carbon emissions by providing clean, stable green electricity to households and businesses. This will serve as a key step in driving local energy independence and environmental improvement.
