PVTIME – China Electric Power Construction Corporation (PowerChina) has begun construction on two major photovoltaic projects in Saudi Arabia. A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the R5-MAS site to mark the official start of work. The 1,750MW development, comprising the 1,250MW R5-MAS project in Ha’il Province and the 500MW AHK2 scheme in Medina Province, represents a significant milestone in PowerChina’s expansion into the high-end energy market of the Middle East.

PowerChina will deliver design, procurement, construction, and operation and maintenance services for both solar plants throughout the full project lifecycle. This initiative is a prime example of international collaboration, uniting partners such as the State Power Investment Corporation and the French energy firm EDF, and represents a notable breakthrough in the Middle Eastern market.
The environmental impact will be substantial. Once operational, the projects are set to generate 4.4 billion kWh of electricity annually, which is enough to power 550,000 households. They will also cut carbon emissions by 2.88 million tonnes each year, supporting Saudi Arabia’s ongoing transformation of its energy structure.
Strategically, the development highlights PowerChina’s “Dual Ocean” strategy, which focuses on overseas and offshore markets, strengthening the company’s leading position in the global new energy sector and showcasing Chinese solutions to promote worldwide progress towards a low-carbon energy future.
