PVTIME – New data highlights a dramatic surge in India’s rooftop solar capacity. Analysis firm Mercom reported that 2.8 GW was added in the first half of 2025, which is 158% higher than the 1.1GW recorded in the first half of 2024. The second quarter of 2025 alone saw 1.6GW of new capacity, marking a 33% increase on the first quarter of 2025’s 1.2GW and a 121% rise compared to the second quarter of 2024’s 731MW. Energy consultancy JMK Research recorded a similar figure of 3.2GW in H1 2025 and forecasts that 7GW of rooftop solar capacity will be added across the full year.

Residential installations led Q2 growth, accounting for 74% of new capacity. Industrial use followed with 19%, while the commercial sector accounted for 6% and government entities for 0.5%. This sharp increase is largely driven by India’s PM Surya Ghar (Prime Minister’s Solar Home Scheme), which uses an online portal to accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar in the residential market.
Regionally, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Rajasthan are leading the rooftop solar market, together accounting for 64% of total installations. Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh drove most of the growth in Q2, and by June 2025 Gujarat alone accounted for over 27% of India’s total rooftop solar capacity. Assam posted the highest quarterly compound growth rate of all the states, with installations rising by almost 24% from Q2 2024 to Q2 2025, signalling expansion beyond the regions that had traditionally led the way. Nevertheless, the market remains highly concentrated, with India’s top 10 states accounting for almost 81% of cumulative installations by June 2025.
Earlier in 2025, India’s total solar installed capacity surpassed 100GW, establishing it as the world’s fourth-largest solar market. Its domestic module manufacturing capacity has also increased from 2.3GW in 2014 to over 100GW by August 2025. Backed by government policy support and growing energy demand, India’s rooftop solar market continues to expand rapidly, with significant future potential.
