100GW! Iran Grants Solar Power Licences

PVTIME – Jafar Mohammadi Nejad Sijarudi, SATBA’s Deputy Director of Investments, has confirmed that Iran has awarded construction licences for almost 100GW of solar projects.

He highlighted the role of renewables in addressing Iran’s electricity supply gap of between 23,000 and 24,000MW, noting that they ease grid load during peak demand, even if they do not fully close the shortfall. He referenced global forecasts that place renewables at 46% of global power generation in 2024.

However, Sijarudi acknowledged that there are implementation challenges, estimating that only 15% of the licensed capacity will become operational. Financing constraints, inadequate infrastructure, and limited execution capacity are key bottlenecks.

He stressed Iran’s untapped renewable potential, pointing to progress in nations with fewer resources. The large-scale licence issuance aims to stimulate market activity and attract private capital to clean energy through policy guidance.

As a major fossil fuel-dependent energy producer, Iran has recently experienced severe power shortages. Developing renewables offers a practical solution to this issue and will transform the energy landscape. According to industry insiders, the licences signal a strong commitment to clean energy, and the gradual resolution of supporting issues is set to boost the country’s energy transition.
