Three Gorges Group Begins Construction of 2.1GW Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal Project in Qinghai

PVTIME – Construction of Three Gorges Group’s 2.1GW Solar Thermal Project officially began on October 15th. Th project will be split between Three Gorges Group’s Hainan and Haixi energy bases in Qinghai Province. These two solar thermal projects are a part of the first phase of 100GW large-scale wind power photovoltaic base projects that President Xi Jinping announced at the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 15).

Three Gorges Energy Hainan Base’s Qingyu DC Phase II photovoltaic solar thermal project has a total installed capacity of 1GW, of which photovoltaic installed capacity is 900MW and solar thermal installed capacity is 100MW. The total installed capacity of the Golmud photovoltaic solar thermal project of the Three Gorges Energy’s Haixi Base is 1.1GW, of which the installed photovoltaic capacity is 1GW and the solar thermal installed capacity is 100MW.

After the completion and commissioning of the photovoltaic solar thermal projects in Hainan and Haixi Bases, it is estimated that the annual average power generation can reach 5 billion kWh, which can effectively increase the proportion of new energy in UHV transmission and transformation channels and increase the utilization rate of clean energy.

The photovoltaic solar thermal project makes full use of the abundant sunlight and desertified land resources in Qinghai, actively promotes the sustainable development of new energy, effectively assists desertification control and ecological restoration, and injects new momentum into the comprehensive green transformation of Qinghai’s economic and social development.

It is reported that the photovoltaic solar thermal projects of the Hainan and Haixi bases of Three Gorges Energy will save about 1.43 million MT of standard coal every year, reduce about 3.74 million MT of carbon dioxide, and reduce the emission of various harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.
